How to Repair Xbox 360 Red
Rings of
Death

Are you having
problems with your Xbox 360? I know its
frustrating to be without your system, especially if you
have the Xbox
360 Red Rings of Death (RROD). This is a very
common problem, and many people will
probably tell you Microsoft is your only option -- this is
untrue.
Just know that there
is a better way then going
to Microsoft. Microsoft might actually be the route to
take if they knew what they were doing, but with
the
repeated complaints about
their technical support, the facts speak for
themselves.
It's important to know
there is another way to repair your Xbox 360 and this
repair will permanently fix your Xbox
360. Along with the Red Ring of Death there are
also other 360 errors that will no longer
be a problem for you by using this method. 1 &
2 Red Light errors, Graphic Glitches, Freezeup's
and the E74 error code, can all be gotten rid of as
well -- you're pretty much killing 7 birds with 1
stone. With all of these errors repaired playing
your 360 will never be worrisome again. I know every time
when I used to turn my system on, I'd prepare myself for the
worst --not
anymore.
I'd like to mention that
the Xbox 360 red light fix pro repair guide is
the source of this repair, and responsible
for bringing it to public attention. I'd highly advise
that you
check out the guide for yourself and I recommend you use it
if you plan on repairing your system
yourself.

Keep in mind that
repairing your system will require you take your system
apart.
Most people realize
this and are afraid of voiding their warranty. If
this is a concern don’t fret because you will be
permanently repairing your system;
something that Microsoft does not seem to know how to
do.
| NOTE
:
This is a general outline of
the repair process to the Red Ring of Death.
This guide does not cover how
to repair any other errors associated with the
Xbox 360. This
guide should
not be used as your only
source of reference to repairing
your broken system. This guide is
here to illustrate the simplicity and
authenticity of the repair process taught
by James Deans'
Xbox 360 Red Light Fix Pro Repair
Guide. |
To
properly repair your system yourself it
is highly recommended
that you
get the
repair guide that taught me how to repair my own
system. You can get that guide,
here. With that
guide you will be walked through the entire repair process with
visual and audible aid demonstrated in High Definition video.
This will offer you a more precise and exact method to
repairing your system, as well as many other system errors
associated with the Xbox 360.
Tools:
There are a number of
different tools you will need and most of them
can be purchased at a local hardware shop - unless you
already have them around your house. They're pretty
common tools so this shouldn't much of a problem.
You can get the entire list of necessary tools right at
my, Xbox
360 repair
parts section.
Disassembly:
The first steps you
will now take from here involve opening the casing on the
Xbox. This is a fairly simply process. You first will
want to remove the hard drive.
To do this, simply
press on the button illustrated in the image below. To
remove it just pull it straight off once the button has
been pressed.
1. Release Hard
Drive

2. Remove
Face-Plate
Next we will be removing the face
plate. To do this, place your fingers in the USB port,
grab the case and pull it straight off. Keep in mind
to be delicate when handling the plastic pieces of your
360.

3.
Remove Side-Panels
Now we
will be removing the grey side panels. You will want to
start with the side opposite to the side that had the
Hard Drive on it. That side requires a bit more
explanation and we'll save it for last.
This task
will require the use of our paper-clip. There are 6 tabs
that will need to be released in order to remove the
first ventilation shield. These tabs are located on both
sides of the Xbox 360. If you look through the little
holes on the side of the 360 you will be able to see
them.

And the reverse side of the
360

Simply
lift the side panel while individually unlocking
each tab with your paper clip.
Now
here's a look at the hard drive side:

This is where the third tabs are
located:

Just
repeat the same process for both sides that you
followed when you removed the first ventilation
shield.
4.
Remove Lower Casing
Now
that the side panels have been removed, we will want
to next remove the lower portion of the Xbox 360. We want
to do the lower portion because the top portion requires
that we remove screws to remove it. In order to get to
the screws the bottom has to come off. To do this, there
are several tabs that will need to be un-done in order to
remove the bottom.
There are
four tabs that can be released with your finger nail on
the front of the xbox 360 and there are 7 tabs on the
back that will require our knife or pointy object. We
will first want to start with the back side of the Xbox
360. Just use your pointy object to undo these tabs. Here
are their locations:

The tabs on the
front can be un-done with your fingernail. And here are
their locations:

Once these have been
un-done, lay the Xbox 360 on it's top (bottom side facing
up) and pull the lower half right off.
5. Remove Outer
Screws
When all of this is done,
this is what you should see:

The highlighted areas in red
and green are the areas of the screws that you will next have
to remove. To remove these screws you will be using a Torx T-10
screwdriver. Make sure to keep all of the screws that you
remove together.
I highly
recommend that you get the entire repair process with
High Definition videos at:
The Xbox 360 Red Light Fix Pro Repair
Guide
6.Remove Eject
Button
Next we will be removing
the eject button. It's held on by a tab at its end, so all you
will need to do is simply grab it and pull it straight up.
Here's an illustration:

It's
important that this comes off at this stage because if you
try and take it off when removing the top portion of
the Xbox 360 you will snap the eject
button.
7.Remove Top
Casing
Now that
the screws have been removed you can flip the 360 over
and remove the top portion of the Xbox 360 - simple.
Here's what you should see when
complete:

8.
Remove DVD/CD Drive
Next we need to remove the DVD drive. There aren't any screws
holding this down so you can simply lift it up out of the
casing and disconnect the wires in the
back as shown:

9. Fan Shroud & Fan
Removal
Now we will be removing the fan
shroud. There is a tab inside the casing that will need to be
released to remove this part.
Once the casing of the fans has
been removed, the fans need to come out. Be sure to disconnect
the fans first. Next lift up on the metal piece above the fans
and pull the fans out.

repair process with High Definition videos at:
The Xbox 360 Red Light Fix Pro Repair
Guide
10. Remove 8 X
Screws
The next step is to prepare the
removal of the mother board. We do this by removing the 8
screws that are on the underside of the Xbox
360.
11. Remove
Light Cover
Next we will be removing the cover for the
lights on the front of your 360. This is removed by simply
pulling up on the top part of the cover gently and it will come
off easily.

12. Remove RF
Module
The RF
Module will need to be removed next. There are three
screws on here that will need to be removed with the T8
Torx Screwdriver. They are in an upside triangle pattern
so you can't miss them. Once the screws have been removed
just pull on the board and it will come right
off.

13. Remove
Mother-Board
Now
it's time to remove the motherboard. Make
sure the front of the Xbox 360 is facing you. With the front
of the system facing you grab the heat sinks and gently lift
them up and this will release the motherboard. If you have
problems here make sure the Motherboard is completely free
and isn't being caught on something. Handle this
step with care.
14. Remove X-Clamps and Heat
Sinks
You will
remove the X-Clamps that hold the heat sinks in place, by
using your flat head screw driver and gently lifting up on
the corner and lifting up. Be very careful with this step
and take your time when doing it.

When
the X-Clamps are removed, the Heat Sinks can now be
removed. If the X Clamps get bent while you are
removing them, this is ok.

15.
Apply Thermal
Compound
Once your
system has been completely disassembled we will be removing
the thermal compound on the GPU and CPU. This is a delicate
process and it is highly recommended that you use
The Xbox 360 Pro Repair Guide to learn how to do this step
PROPERLY.
16. Re-Adjust Heat
Sinks
Once the thermal compound has been applied the Heat Sinks will
need to be adjusted. Now there is a specific way in which the
heat sinks need to be adjusted to prevent the Red Ring of Death
from coming back. This is where the secret to having a
permanently repaired system comes in. I would advise using
The Xbox 360 Pro Repair Guide to learn how to do this
properly.
17. Re-Assemble
Console
Assuming you have successfully
done everything so far, you will be done with the Red
Ring of Death Repair. However, this isn't the end of
the repair process. In order to repair 1&2 Red Light
Errors, Graphic Glitches, Game Freezes, and the E74 Error Code
there is a further modification to be made. I won't be
covering how to repair those errors in this guide. To learn how
to rid/prevent your console from those errors you will
need to get the Xbox 360 pro repair guide for that
method. The Pro Repair Guide will also cover with you
the entire process to fully re-assembling your system so that
you will not make any mistakes along the
way.
Now this is the process that I
used to repair my console and it has been working and running
flawlessly. Keep in mind that this guide is simply an outline
of the repair process to illustrate the point that this is an
actual and genuine repair method for the red ring of
death. I would not advise you use this guide as your only
source of reference to repairing your console as there are
essential parts of the repair process that this guide simply
cannot cover. To get the entire guide and all of the benefits
that it has to offer you I highly advise you to get
the Xbox 360 Red Ligth Fix Pro Repair
Guide.
